YOLANDA GARRY
Hello my name is Yolanda Garry, soon to be on-air personality. I am a 34 year old Master Plumber/Welder from Washington DC. I would like to start by telling you how excited I am to have found your website. When I started the program I will admit that I was a little skeptical, because I originally had a mentor that was hardly available and had little time for teaching. Constantly pressing on I was able to find Motown Mike a very dedicated and professional production manager who knows his stuff and you got him to be my new mentor.
My first session with Motown Mike was very interesting. He showed me around the studios and introduced me to all the jocks (which was a blast for me). He taught me on some of the equipment like mixing boards, reel to reel and patch board panel, which he masters. Mostly everything that they do in the studio is on computers which makes it pretty much easy to operate. Also he sat down for a very long period of time and told me how he got started and why he was able to be in the position that he is today.
I could really appreciate that because he was sincere and very busy, but he still took the time for me. Motown Mike also wanted to make sure that radio was what I really wanted to do. He told me that this journey would not be easy and that I must take rejection in stride, because it could make or break me. Another good quality about Mike is that he is very noticeable and keen with the ear. He said that every time I get behind the microphone I want to change my style. He tells me to just relax and be myself, to let my personality shine and I don't think you can get anymore genuine than that. Each week we spend hours on my assignments. He also gives me projects of his own which I've learned how often I should identify the station call letters, music intro and outro, talk (liner) and so much more.
I can honestly say that I've got a lot to learn in my quest to be a radio announcer. My favorite assignment thus far has been commercial announcing and writing. We had lots of fun with that one. Motown Mike was so impressed with my delivery that I have already done several commercial spots on the radio and was also an extra in the HBO Movie "The Wire" which was an awesome experience.
In all its a work in progress and I Love it"! Already knowing that it takes time and long hours of practice, its going to be a continuing process for me.
Its funny, but for the first time everything is clear. I believe the more I read and practice my assignments the better I will be. The skys the limit! Things are finally starting to take a positive turn in my life. Soon I will be mentoring the next radio broadcast student. I am so happy with the Getamentor Program that I just don't know what else to say. Finally I want to tell you Phillip that you are like an angel to me. No, I have never met you personally, but you put me in a place where I have always dreamed of being and I thank you for that.
Sincerely yours,
Yolanda Garry

I dream of being a complete radio broadcast professional. Providing enthusiastic energy and flexibility, there's no question that I could fit into a cluster of formats ranging from gospel to jazz, light rock and R&B.
Let it be known that my talents are not confined to working behind the microphone. I have also garnered several television and film credits including the HBO mini series "The Wire" a Chris Rock movie "Head of State" and "The Red Dragon" with Anthony Hopkins.
I love the art of performing whether it's behind the microphone or in front of the camera; it's something that Ive always held dear to my heart.
I am a native Washingtonian, holding a Masters License in Plumbing from the UA Trade and Mechanical School in Maryland.
I strive on having a positive attitude and personable on-air delivery, so that I could inspire other young adults to achieve their goals and to take a positive out look on life.
Thank You!
